A Holly Jolly Christmas

Readers, we had the most lovely Christmas. I mean, really and truly. For the first time ever, we were home on Christmas morning and then stayed home (usually after the Santa craziness we pack up and head to Vermont or New York, depending on the year). But in 2019, our family came to us and we celebrated with Grandma, Grandpa and GG. The gifts were perfect, the boys were happy, the house looked beautiful and we all felt the magic.

There were lots of Decembery things we did (filed under “holiday cheer”) but for the first time, the boys never went and saw Santa. They didn’t really ask and it didn’t seem super important somehow 😦 We also picked our tree in about 3 minutes: it was the first one we saw, it looked good, done. That’s usually a process (and I have, in the past, devoted whole posts to it, like here and here). If you’ve followed this blog since the beginning, by now you know what Christmas cookie making looks like and that we read Christmas books all month long. I would hold off from posting those, except the boys still watch so intently when we bake:

And now, Ashton is the one that reads the stories 🙂

Besides that, we went to church on Christmas Eve, had some wonderful meals and generally enjoyed ourselves immensely. Some of my favorite pics:

Reading the Polar Express

Making cinnamon rolls for the morning:

While the children were nestled all snug in their beds…

Santa came and of course his gifts had their own special paper, but there were SO MANY PRESENTS that you could not even tell!

And the main event! I didn’t include most of the blurry present-opening pictures. You’re welcome.

GG received voluminous hair:
Grandpa got Alabama tickets:

And Alex got his desk 🙂 More below on that.

 Nok hockey:

Time to play

and cook some more:

And we just hung out! It was totally perfect. The boys got a lot of sports stuff and while they did get a Lego set each and some new games, there were really no true “toys”. Their lists were pretty difficult this year. Alex wanted, specifically, “a desk with a trash can and lots of white paper.” He started asking for that in the beginning of December and never wavered. He even practiced having one with a box.

So I found a desk on Craigslist like I do and had it refinished for him just in time for Christmas. If you want to see the totally adorable video of him opening it, click here. It’s now up in his room and he stays very busy while sitting at it. And of course now Ashton wants one.

Anyway we had such an amazing holiday and felt incredibly fortunate for all that we have.

On to the three worst, most awful months of the year, the completely useless January February and March. Such fun posts ahead!

Catching up on November!

Well let’s see, what did we do this month! First, Ashton has been playing a lot of hockey and in my next post I will tell a super cool story about that. But we love to go to the Bentley games now (say hey for $7.50 staff tickets!) and it’s been consuming our schedule for the most part. In fact I’m at the rink right now writing this post while Ashton has practice haha. Friday night fantastic.

Anyway the first weekend of the month I traveled to Austin for my cousin Jason’s wedding. It was beautiful and we had the best time (made even better by the fact that I went solo!). And it was great to see all of my west coast family including Papa and GG. These are some of my favorite pictures:

That was an amazing weekend, for sure 🙂 Back to reality though, I came home and promptly turned 39. GG sent me flowers:
And as mentioned in the first paragraph, I spend a lot of time near ice now (= <32 DEGREES) so Jason got me a Canada Goose jacket 😀

Happyyyy Nessssssss.
And then of course, the major part of November which was Thanksgiving. What we have here is a case of “sometimes things just don’t work out as planned.” 😦 It was supposed to be a Vermont Thanksgiving for us and at the last minute, I got sick and we had to call everything off. I have to admit, it was pretty bleak, the idea of being home just the four of us when we are used to either hosting or traveling. But, as luck would have it, I was feeling better by turkey day and we still pulled it off! We had our whiskey sours, cooked a turkey and made mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce (thanks Brae Burn), green bean casserole, stuffing and beets. The boys even helped! We did not let a quiet day slow us down and it ended up being some great family time for us. Jason took the boys to the annual Natick-Framingham high school football game in the morning, we went for a nice long walk, played some football, games, etc. At the end of the day, we made the best of it and actually had no complaints 🙂

Beets are hard work:
So are turkeys!
Some outside time:

HAHA that’s such a blurry picture. It’s hard to shoot a family photo on a timer with a phone that’s propped in the storm drain from the street.

Getting ready to eat. Honestly, this is pretty normal in our house (“But Mommy, we had to take off our clothes, we were so hot.”)

The legs were a big thrill, it was like “the thing”. Who knows. Anyway, November is done and gone and just an appetizer for December anyway…let Christmas begin!

Halloween 2019

So Halloween at ages 5 and 8 happened and here is the skinny.

In the pumpkin department:
The usual scooping out of the guts and all that. Alex commanded me to do a skull and crossbones and I modeled mine after my favorite emoji.

I didn’t do too bad! Jason and Ashton did pointy teeth AGAIN. That’s all they ever do – have some creativity, sheesh.

In the costume department:
For a long time Alex wanted to be a parrot. Parrot as in the bird and if this choice is a mystery to you, well, same. But then after about a month he was like, “Now I want to be a vending machine. I will walk around and pass out snacks.” Well that was sufficiently funny so I said fine. But it turns out making a vending machine costume is no small feat so on the weekend before Halloween, Jason took both boys to Party City in hopes of inspiration/diversion from the parrot and the vending machine.

Now, this whole time Ashton was easy because he was just going to wear his football uniform and go as, you guessed it, a football player. But he scored himself a funny wig at Party City and Alex, oh Alex. He came home with an zombie hunter outfit that was basically a vest wrapped with faux bullets, camo pants and a bloody ax. He was so happy. Me on the other hand? Well there was no way he could wear that to school – like the principal would have called me (no violent costumes).

And so, on the day of the Halloween parade, Alex had to wear a hand-me-down ninja and he was, shall we say, quite grumpy.

Up close, that’s:

By the time we saw him for the K parade at school though it was all smiles.
And then the rest of the day was sort of, like, crazy smooth?! Grandma and Grandpa came up, the kids got off the bus, and our usual crew (Elijah and Crosby) went out to trick or treat.

There was a little mayhem afterwards with the sorting, trading, and inventory, but when I told the boys they could not eat more than three pieces they said “Ok Mommy, no problem” and didn’t protest their 8:30 bedtime. Not going to lie, I pinched myself haha.

So yeah ummm that’s pretty much it lol. No severe maniacal behavior or candy craziness in 2019! I wonder if that will carry over into the Christmas season, we shall see… 🙂

Family Pictures 2019

Well we decided to switch things up this year for our family photos. Instead of our usual fall theme, when the photographer we use announced she was doing beach sessions, I thought hmmm, that could work!

And it pretty much did! Although the weather was totally dark and stormy, and I felt like the wind was whipping my hair in every direction. It was damp, our feet were freezing because the sand was wet from the rain earlier that day, and it took an hour to get there so the boys were a bit crazed.

But you would never be able to tell 🙂 Here are the best ones! I can’t figure out why they aren’t posting like crystal clear but sometimes the internet is mysterious.

Nill Family Photos – September 14, 2019, Crane’s Beach

First Days of School – Fall 2019!

Well, my official first day of school photos are here!

Ashton: Wednesday, August 28
Age 8, 2nd grade, Mrs. Chase
Alex: Thursday, August 29
Age 5, Kindergarten, Mrs. Gregg

They stagger the Kindergartners (and it’s a shortened day) so half started Wednesday with the rest of the school and the other half Thursday (which was Alex’s group). Friday was the first real, full day, with the bus and everything!
Ashton of course did fine. And honestly, so did Alex. He has been waiting to go to Lilja Elementary since Ashton started two years ago so it was like his time had finally come. I didn’t even cry 🙂 He was too happy and too ready!
So this school year will bring a lot of things. The first big change is that we’ve said goodbye to our beloved nanny Jen.
Her boyfriend Mike was a regular as well

And the four of them had a blast this summer. It is definitely the end of an era. Alex doesn’t know a life without her! She started when he was 3 months old and they have a really special bond. We all cried and hugged when we said goodbye but she will definitely be back to babysit!
Mondays and Tuesdays, the boys will be taking Bus 20 home. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, they’ll go straight from Lilja to the after school program at Longfellow. We layer in football, hockey, CCD and other fall activities and that’s what’s up! Bring it on, Fall…

Happy 8th Birthday to Ashton!

Ashton (and this blog) have just turned 8! Eight. Eiiiiiiight. Yep, it happened on August 3rd and I’m here to tell you all about it.

The past few years, Ashton’s birthday has fallen on our “family vacation” week and I thereby get away with not throwing him a birthday party :-/ We usually do something special while we are away and that satisfies as long as he gets presents. This year was no different and we were on the cape (see last post). Actually Saturday, August 3rd was the day we had to pack up and go home, which, sadness. And not wanting to fully exit “vacation mode” we stopped at Duxbury Beach on the way back. It is here that Ashton spent most of his birthday hours, doing what he does best, which I can only describe as “beach busy”.

Even after a full week at the beach, Ashton and Alex got busy collecting rocks, sorting them, trading them, assembling towers, building sand castles, swimming, diving for things, etc. This is all Ashton to a T – he can keep himself quite occupied, and if that is not a parenting goal then I don’t know what is.
Anyway we got home and had a BBQ and instead of a birthday cake, we all went to Dairy Queen and sang a little Happy Birthday at a picnic table. He seemed content 🙂
Other “all about Ashton” type things!
Height: 53 inches (4′ 5″) – 89th %
Weight: 63 pounds – 73rd %
Grade: 2
Shoes: 2.5Y
Clothes: Mostly 8’s
Teeth lost: 8 (front top and bottom 4)
Teeth crooked: 6
Fashion: Luckily, Ashton still blindly accepts any outfit I tell him to wear. He does love being in head-to-toe Under Armour with the tall socks and hightops, but understands when to wear sport clothes and when to wear regular ones (i.e. collars to school! May this never end haha).
Food: Ashton eats and eats and eats. And eats. He outeats a McDonald’s happy meal now too – we have to supplement that box with like, a lot of other stuff. Besides his food allergies, peas, and raw tomatoes, he’ll try almost anything and usually doesn’t bother to complain. His favorite thing that I make for dinner is stromboli.
Haircut: Ashton is really in to his hair. His current cut involves a very crisp part that he calls his “line”:
He gets very distressed when it disappears, which is every three days considering how fast his hair grows. As our resident stylist, Jason stays on top of it 😉
Newest obsession: cars. We have a Corvette in our neighborhood and every time we drive by, he presses his nose to the window and goes “Ahhh, just look at that!” And then the other day told me Corvettes don’t have trunks because that’s where the engine is. True? I have no idea. And he is constantly asking if certain cars are faster than others, more expensive etc. Ashton is currently on the fence between getting a Porsche or a Subaru Crosstrek (in orange, specifically) when he grows up. He has put a lot of thought into these choices.
Also loves: Dude Perfect, Pokemon cards, tracking his steps on his Fitbit, rollercoasters, mini golf, collecting treasures like shark teeth and shells, games, things that have remote controls, cool socks
Sports: This season, football and hockey. Hockey starts tonight, actually. But football he’s been playing since August 5th and I can’t believe how grown up he looks in his uniform!

 Another shot of the line:

So, if you see a car with pads and helmets and hockey and football equipment flying out of it, wave hello to me.
Health: Mostly perfect 🙂 A little update on this one. Ashton’s always had articulation issues and also breathing issues. His nose is perpetually blocked. I took him to the ENT last spring and he had his adenoids out and his turbinates cauterized on May 8. I expected everything to clear up pretty much overnight and months later, things are the exact same! His ENT put him on a daily nasal spray but we have seen literally no results. So fixing that somehow is still on my list.
The best idea he has ever had in his 8 years on this earth: So, the cleaners come twice a month. One particular day we got home after them and of course, the house was spotless which is basically my favorite thing of all time. The boys immediately went to the kitchen and started tearing into the graham crackers. I threw my hands up and made some exasperated comment like couldn’t the floors go five freaking minutes without being covered in crumbs?! The cleaners just came!
Ashton looked at me, looked at his graham cracker, and goes “C’mon Alex, let’s eat over the trash.”
I have seriously never loved him more.
According to his teacher: I thought I would share what his first grade teacher wrote about him this past June on his ROSP 🙂
“Ashton is a friendly first grader with a cheerful disposition! He takes great pride in his work and is making steady progress academically thus far this year. I only expect this to continue, as he become more and more motivated intrinsically rather than looking to others for praise, something he is beginning to develop. He is working on taking his time and doing is most careful work, particularly in writing, or being willing to return to “finished” work to revise (add/delete/edit). He is sweet and cares for all the members of the 1JB and Lilja Community and is often a role model for others!
Ashton has grown in all areas of academics this year in first grade, due in no small part to his own inquisitiveness, which he brings to all subjects! He’s been a joy to teach as he always tries to apply concepts taught and even often remembers them and carries them over to other situations, as seen in particular with his reading skills; he’s truly blossomed as a reader! He is a strong mathematician as well and enjoys challenges when given the option. He has made marked progress in writing but if he were to work on anything over the summer (in addition to reading of course) I’d suggest keeping the writing fresh and rereading to make sure the conventions are as good as his craft. He is poised for a great year in second grade! Have a wonderful summer!”
He definitely has things to work on but I think I am especially proud of this section of the report – 4 means “consistently” and is the best you can get 🙂
All 4’s by R2/the end of the year! That’s my boy.
Overall, Ashton is so good. He’s helpful and rational and insightful and empathetic. He takes amazing care of Alex and is patient, teaches him things, and includes him. He’s also sensitive, sweet and has an incredible sense of right from wrong. One time after a play in football practice where he scored, he did this big touchdown celebration dance. I pulled him aside when he came off the field and said “Ashton! These are your teammates – you cannot brag like that in front of everyone. It’s ok to quietly tell yourself good job and to feel proud, but you are all working together and you do not want to make anyone feel bad.” He looked me in the eye and said “You’re right Mommy” (he still calls me that) and I could tell he 100% took it to heart. The next night at practice he scored a few times and at the end he said, “Mommy did you see? I did not dance ONE time, just like you told me. Even though I had some awesome plays, I kept it to myself because I didn’t want anyone thinking we weren’t a team.”
Ashton honest to goodness said that. To say we simply adore him and are so proud of him would be an understatement. Happy 8th birthday to our Ashton! WE LOVE YOU!!

Cape Cod 2019! Summer vacaaaaay

Ok so I suspect 75% of my readers (6 out of a possible 8, haha) are also on Facebook and have therefore seen most of these pictures already. To that 75% I say: feel free to skip this post and look forward to the next one, which will be a riveting account of second grade football so far.

Let’s dive in! By way of background, I was feeling a tad “been there done that” with Block Island this year. Given where we live, pretty much everyone gets down to the cape and you know, it’s for a good reason. There are zillions of beaches and so many sights and things to do: mini golf, bumper boats, ziplines, trampolines, ice cream, shark stuff, water sports, etc etc. Generally more goings-on than BI and we wanted to explore a new place.

{Pretend I’ve just told you all the criteria and research I did about where we were going to go. Turns out the cape is huge.} We ended up in Chatham and specifically, a house walking distance from Ridgevale Beach. It was so cute and actually perfect for us.

Gosh we had such a great week you guys! The weather was this:

And the only way to do this is to go day by day. Sorry.
So let’s commence! Saturday July 27. Uncle Erik was with us and we took off to meet up with Kari and Ben and get over the bridge as early as possible.

Fun fact: we didn’t even ride our bikes once.
This was our first experience out on the beach:

And then we went into town, had lunch, moved into the house and enjoyed some late afternoon beach time. Off to a good start!

Sunday GG arrived and we spent our first full day at Ridgevale Beach. The week before we were there, there had been a tornado and serious storms in the area, so the water all week in the sound was churned up, brown, and full of seaweed 😦 So that wasn’t super fun but we ended up getting to other beaches that had been raked later in the week. See in the background?

The Seafarer, where GG/Erik/Grandma and Grandpa stayed had a pool so we did a quick dip there after the beach:

Followed by lawn games before dinner (you can’t have long grass for those! Ashton generously cut it for us haha):

Monday – White Crest Beach in Wellfleet. It just felt epic, the geography is so dramatic because you hike down the bluff to get there:

And the ocean rolls in with these emerald green swells.
It was a great day! We even made it to the Beachcomber for some oyster shooters real quick 🙂

But beware the beauty! It was very much “swim at your own risk” – the current was really too strong for the kids and we didn’t want to go in anyway due to the seals! There were so many, just bobbing along, not a care in the world.
Ok well there’s only one in that picture but there were TONS all day. This was the viral twitter photo that emerged two days later, a little further up:
Because where there are seals…Daahh DUN.
Spoiler alert, we did not become Jaws victims and played miniature golf on the way home.

Tuesday – We rolled on down to Ridgevale, wagon style:

Look at Alex in his sunglasses chugging his seltzer. Cracks me up.

But ugh when we got there, sooo much seaweed 😦

So we hopped in the car and went to Hardings Beach which was a bit better.

I promise that’s the last seaweed report. Anyway Grandma and Grandpa arrived and we celebrated Ashton turning 8 🙂

Aunt Lizzy got Ashton the same shirt that Holden happened to be wearing 🙂
He got a skimboard, a metal detector, some Pokemon stuff, clothes, the first Harry Potter book, and a FitBit. What he DIDN’T get was cake or ice cream because it got too late to go out 😦 Like everyone was crying and it was totally my fault. The grown-up dinner took way too long to make.
WEDNESDAY moving right along here! Red River Beach. Ahhhh.

The fun thing about this day was that our new neighbor friends in Natick were also in Chatham that week and they met us at the beach. Kellan and Alex are going to be in Kindergarten together at Lilja.
So cute. Off the explore! These kids spent so many hours this week collecting fish, snails, crabs and other little guys 🙂

More Tidal Ball. So much Tidal Ball.

Grand Slam Entertainment post-beach! All the fun things plus Kari and I ziplined! Psssh, you can’t tell, but I’m actually not an American Ninja Warrior or anything 😉

Thurrrrrrsday! We’re getting there everyone. Shopping in the morning and the shark museum:

(Nice hand placement Alex. Hand to face).
Afternoon at the Ridgevale tide pools

Dinner and then the baseball game 🙂

SO fun. Ashton was obsessed with catching a fly ball and we had to drag him out of there.

 {Pause for a water break. This post is exhausting.}

Friday! Happy birthday Callie! Stay with me…

Friday, ironically, we figured out where the very best part of Ridgevale Beach actually is – all the way down by the inlet. The water is warm, clear and shallow. It was gorgeous.

Erik, GG, Grandma and Grandpa all left Friday morning so we decided to head to Wequassett Resort for our last dinner and Callie’s birthday.

This picture sums Alex up to a T 🙂

Last stop of the night, Sundae School in Harwich Port.

I’m not usually an ice cream person, but I had some coffee Oreo thing and it was like, incredible. This place lived up to its reputation.

And Saturday, everyone, we packed up and went home. To our family who always drives FAR distances to be with us, thank you. To Cape Cod, you define what it feels like to be on “summer vacation”. To Mother Nature, you more than made up for last year and the year before. And to all the creatures who spent time in our buckets wondering what the hell happened, send me your therapy bills.

School starts in two weeks y’all. Things are about to get real!

Ode to Good Harbor Beach

Once there was a beach in Gloucester
It is simply the BEST kid-exhauster
The water, the waves, summer in its prime!
So much adventure, so little time.
How’s this for a quick little guide:
Get there early and arrive at low tide
Cross over the sand bar, head up the hill
The view is gorgeous and the hike is a thrill.

Come down and it’s time for snack number one
(everyone’s hungrier under the sun)
Then grab a blanket and hit the sand
Kids take a rest while parents get tanned.

Pick up the football, throw pass throw

Go check out the pools during tide that is low.

Hermit crabs, fish and creatures galore
So many wonders to find on the shore.

Speaking of tide pools, these are unreal
Waist deep, like grottos, and the water is teal.

Then snack number one hundred and fifty eleven

Grab that boogey board and head into heaven
Crash through the surf and float away
This is the heart of a child’s play.
Pretty soon they are in the zone
This day, I’m telling you, has completely flown
The laughing, the thumbs up, the eruptions of cheer
For the best videos click here and then here.

One last refreshment, some Italian ice
Nothing on the beach tastes quite so nice

Time to head home and fire up the grill
Today we earned our license to chill.

P.s this was obviously just a post with so-so poetry about how much I love Good Harbor Beach haha. Our Cape Cod summer vacation is up next!!

July 4 and someone turns 42

Guys I’m obviously just skipping right over spring at this point. It was rainy, filled with sports, and general busyness. The boys had their last days of school and while I would love to do “first day/last day” side by sides, some things you just have to let go. Let’s get recent, shall we? Like July 4 weekend! We did something completely original and headed down to HB NY 😉 But it’s really the best place for celebrating America’s birthday (as well as Jason’s). It’s also a weird anniversary thing for us because the first time I ever went there was for Jason’s 30th, and now he’s 42.

Haha.

Anyway, we went to see some fireworks and hung out at the beach and in the pool with the whole fam and it was perfect 🙂

In pictures.
Thursday night lights, predictable terrible iPhone photos.

Friday

Grandpa made sure to take a nap 😉
Kids table! Libby Owen and the boys

Grownups table
7/6, the best day in the history of everything. Jason’s birthdaaaaaay – a little kite flying and tidal ball on the beach and of course fudgie the whale for dessert.
Um that says 24.

Bocce obvi and Uncle trying to talk some strategy into Alex LOL

The problem with being the best chef in the house is you have to make your own birthday dinner.

Now you’ve got it. 42!

Parting group shot! The family Nill/Stone/Beninati
Mr. Cool in the back seat on the way home.

xoxox all! Hope you had as happy of a 4th as we did 🙂

Mother's Day 2019

Welllll I guess this is my 7th Mother’s Day! And what I have to say about it would fill maybe a…thimble? Is that a saying? It rained all day. ALLLLL.DAAAAAY. Jason worked, we had plans with friends to meet at the bike path and ride to an ice cream stand and wear sunglasses. But no. Instead, we spent 3 hours at the Discovery Museum in Acton. If it had not been for Kathleen (three cheers for other boy moms that are also solo on Mother’s Day!), I would have walked around that place asleep. It was that dreary of a day :-/ But, Ashton and Alex behaved themselves and kept their food demands to a minimum, so that was nice. Oh, and at the museum, Alex made me this:

“Breakfast”. I don’t even know.
So it was kind of another day that just passed by with lots of TV and snacks. My real gift is being delivered next week – the next picture I post of myself you won’t even recognize because I’ll be ten pounds lighter and ten years younger.
I would be remiss if I didn’t formally thank these two, I suppose 😉

All the love I can possibly imagine. Happy Mother’s Day to all 🙂 xoxo
