Family photos 2018

We were on the ball this year everybody! Partially because I had a gift card and partially because I was motivated to get some pictures with the leaves actually still on the trees (last year it was so late and they had all dropped). There’s not much to really say! We went to Wellesley College in October, it was a misty, kind of overcast morning but the pictures still came out fine. If you read this and you are also on my Christmas card address list, prepare to see a few of these twice.

You only need one good one and we got more than that I’d say. The boys are getting easier and easier to bribe as they get older, that’s what it is 😉

A 2 for 1

Well I’m stooping to a new low here in my blogland – I’m *gasp* combining two holidays into one post and I’m going to blow through them (a few pics, minimal text). I’m just too far behind and now that Christmas is almost here, I really can’t spend December in arrears. So:

Halloween

First things first. My themed mantel. This post is nothing without that
This was last year’s and clearly before I took the tags off everything haha. This year’s was better but somehow I don’t have a picture (for shame!). But this the little shelf/coat rack thingy in the kitchen that I change seasonally. It’s safe to say that decorating this is one of the things I live for and I’m not even ashamed to admit that!

Besides the mantel, of course there were the pumpkins. Have to do those. And also of course, both boys had to do the whole thing by themselves. Draw the face (several drafts- magic erasers are good for clearing sharpie off a gourd, who knew?) and then carve all the pointy teeth with an itty bitty serrated pumpkin knife and it all only took a thousand hours. Alex just kept moving his knife in and out of the same spot, never actually making any progress. You could not tell him that though. In the end he cried because he didn’t like how his came out so then I had to give him mine and we started all over. Another thousand hours. Jason and I were permitted to minimally assist at times. It all looked like this.

This is fun. Without fail, Jason sticks his tongue out any time he is concentrating on something. Look at Jason and then look at Ashton 😉

The pumpkins were almost a bigger deal than the trick or treating. I didn’t even attempt to photograph that, but I did end up with some fireball and a hot toddy with my bestie 🙂
Group costume shot with Elijah and Crosby:

So Ashton, full of stealth, was a ninja. Alex was like, a bull. He was like the cowboy AND the bull.

Here’s a more descriptive side shot.

The bull was a bit unwieldy and 4 houses into trick-or-treating, Alex fell twice and had had enough. Luckily Grandma was visiting and took him back to the house to hand out candy. When Jason, Ashton and I rolled in about 8:15 pm, Alex took one look at how much candy Ashton had, cried that Ashton had more than he did (Alex really is a crier), and how was he supposed to go out and get more now that it was too late?
So that was Halloween.
On to…
THANKSGIVING

You know what comes first!

We had a full house for this one – Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Chris, Aunt Lizzie, Owen, and Sarne. Berg, Karen and Jayden came for the actual meal itself, which consisted of the same recipes we make every year. Why mess? (It’s funny, if you look at last year’s post about this, the pictures are pretty much the exact same lol – including one of Grandpa chopping!)

30 pounder!

Whiskey sours, naturally!

Hastily taken photos of the spread

So much to be grateful for! Like how the boys (ages 3, 4, 6 and 7) gave us 10 seconds to eat in peace before needing something lol.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Blue 42, Blue 42, Hut Hut!

I only know that line because of Ace Ventura. ANYWAY, Ashton just wrapped his first season of flag football! We have been allll about the game this fall – practices on Wednesdays (even in the rain!), games on Saturdays, watching it professionally on TV (pause for photos)

under the friday night lights at Natick HS (pause again)

and we even hit a BC game (annnnd pause again).

This was the first year Natick offered a K/1 flag football league and frankly, it was awesome. The coaches, the people, all of it. Ashton actually really learned how to play and the season felt, I don’t know, official. Must have been the green screen 😉

Back row, middle. #7!

It should be noted that Ashton always came home sweaty and filthy (see face):

And on Saturdays, even though his games were often at 8 or 9 am, he wore his jersey the whole day 🙂 In other news, his mouthguard proved to be good practice for the retainer he now wears, and I only had to drag Alex off the field two hundred times during the course of the season! (That’s him next to Ashton:)

His turn next year, when he is in kindergarten (!!).

Just wanted to post some of my favorite pictures somewhere. Enjoy 😀

And a quick video of him scoring a touchdown:
Final huddle of the season. That’s a wrap!

Before and After: Laundry Room

The laundry room, everybody, belongs to me. I’m the only one who uses it and so Jason very rightfully said, “You can do whatever you want in there, I don’t care.” Wheeeee!!

To start from the beginning, the walls were a depressing gray and the room was basically a closet and two laundry machines. I started with the idea of some fun, whimsical wallpaper. I was obsessed with this sample on the wall:
But there was one small problem and that is my knack for picking expensive things. THEY FIND ME. Jason went along with it for awhile (see statement above) but once the installer quoted $400 and we did the math on the actual wallpaper cost (over $1,200, who could have known?) well it was astronomical for a room that is 8×12 and basically a reservoir for dirty clothes. Even I couldn’t justify paying that.
So then I was all fiiiiiiiine, I’ll just paint (bahahaha, meaning I’ll pick the color, Jason will paint). While I was noodling on that, Jason started to build out the shelves/laundry machine “housing”.

The laundry room is small and hard to get decent pictures of. This is the view from the hallway:
Anyway, Jason added crown moulding and after I settled on a color (Pink Bliss/Benjamin Moore), he painted.

Then. THEN. Came these. They were just what I needed to turn this space into something special. The decals came on giant sheets, I had to cut them out and spent a lot of time grouping them on the wall, moving the clusters around, etc. so the overall pattern was balanced.

Let’s pause for a moment of appreciation because I’m super proud of how this came out lol. All the little sprigs and leaves had to be arranged not only so they looked good, but in reverse order of how they were going to be peeled and applied so that the layering looked right. Plus I did the whole thing not actually knowing the full color of the decals under their white paper.

So- before:
After:

The boys helped me peel once I was 100% sure of the placements (there was no rearranging these – once they were stuck that was it):

(This was last June, by the way, hence the bathing suits. That’s how behind I am!)

Anyway, final wall!

It looks painted in person and I totally love it.

Ok what else. We swapped out the light fixture,

Hung a drying rack:

And I made a wreath out of clothespins. Yep I did. Like almost 200 of them, that I spraypainted and then glued sparkly paper on top of. Briefly, the process:

That’s it! A couple before and afters:

(Used canvas to simulate countertop)

And just some afters. As I said this is a hard space to photograph because it’s small!

To completely geek out over this, my dryer sheets are in the pink box and my stain soap is in that octopus thing. Decorative objects can be functional.
Alright well…off to
Wash…dry…fold…repeat!

California Dreamin'

To add on to what was already an awesome summer, the boys and I took a trip to visit my grandparents in Southern California in the middle of August. 3039 in 92626 is a super special place for all of us – we have sooo many memories there from growing up. I hadn’t visited since before Ashton was born, and it was so exciting to have the boys now at an age where we could go and be relaxed about it. We had planned it since February and my mom and Erik were meeting us there.

The morning of the flight out, Thursday, was very hairy. If you want to know the whole story, I have posted it at the bottom. We got to Papa and GG’s around 4 pm on Thursday and a giant bull raft awaited the boys in the pool (thanks Papa!).  That was basically the rest of the day, as you can imagine. What else would we need? Lol

The boys were pooped and in bed by 6:30 pm (helloooo, glorious time change).

Friday – DISNEYLAND! Me, the boys, Uncle Erik, Papa and GG(2). If you ever want to do Disneyland in one day, I have posted, also at the bottom, our itinerary. I spent untold amounts of time reading Yelp reviews of the rides, determining which lines get long and when, what is worth it, what isn’t, etc etc. To many, I realize this seems ridiculous and silly. HOWEVER, ask my fam how happy we all were to have a great plan and I’ll show you a picture that looks like this!

Being shoved in a teacup spells F-U-N, amiright? 😉

But here are a just a few yummy samples from the 1,336 pictures I took.

Alex’s favorite character!

Pew pew! Papa and GG on Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters:
Autopia:

Disneyland Railroad:

Boat to Tom Sawyer Island, which was so cool by the way!

Parade

Alex and GG sat out Big Thunder Mountain Railroad but the rest of us rocked it!

I’ll also make a note about Splash Mountain. Last year, at Disney World, Alex rode all of the rides like what. He was not even 3 and jaws were dropping all over the place. Well it’s clearly because he had no clue about what was happening. 1.5 years later, it was not as impressive. In fact, he screamed bloody murder on Splash Mountain this time. He was so petrified I was honestly figuring out how to stop the ride. Pretty sure he ruined the experience for the other people in (on?) our log. Which brings me to…Best quotes of the day!!

Me (at Splash Mountain, about to board): “Oh, the seats are single file? I thought we would be going in pairs.”
Erik: “Well, two people can’t straddle a log very well can they.”

Mom/GG, as the celebratory bugles were blaring to announce the park’s opening: “I hope they don’t play this music all day.
Random woman walking next to us [in disbelief]: “I hope they do!

Me (in It’s a Small World): “Wow, this ride just keeps on going.”
Erik: “Well Kristen it’s a big world.”

Alex (on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, which is dark and twisty): “I really don’t like this!”
Ashton (frantically turning the wheel, truly believing he was driving our car): “Don’t WORRY Alex! I WILL GET YOU OUT OF HERE!”

Ashton (on Big Thunder, which is a fast roller coaster): “WHOA! Is there someone DRIVING THIS?”

Erik, in Mickey’s house, gazing about appreciatively: “I could live here.”

And so we could, perhaps! It was really that fun despite our blistering schedule. (Literally – it was hot!)

On to Saturday, no slowing down here!! Off to Little Corona to the beach with Erik and GG. Not super compelling pictures of this day.

Ashton made a cool necklace and Alex found a heart shaped rock.

Not pictured was the exploration of that giant rock (boulder?) in the background, covered with spitting anemones, crabs and weird sea bugs.

More pool time when we got home and another early bed time – looooved it.

Sunday was a mish mash of things. Bike riding (Papa attempted to help Alex learn, he just won’t!), then the Fun Zone at Balboa Island, walking the pier, Newport Beach and then shopping at Fashion Island. I got new Ray Bans 😉 What is it about being away and on vacation and feeling no guilt about spending money? (That’s rhetorical.)

And just like that, it was Monday 😦

No drama on the way home. Off we go!

Thank you to Papa and GG(1) for hosting us. Papa for getting the bikes ready and blowing up the bull, and GG for all the food and cleaning up after us. I know it is no small feat to have us in the house, but we loved every single second. XOXOXOXOX! And thank you GG(2) for having so much fun with us. We made great memories.

Lastly, thanks to Erik, for being a truly awesome uncle the entire time. I know this was your favorite part:

Who doesn’t love sifting for pre-planted coins in the blazing hot sand under a relentless sun? I owe you one. Um, several. 😉

Well holy f&*king S#&%T. I am on this airplane by the grace of god. At 7:30 am JetBlue was like oh, we’re not leaving on time at 10:45 anymore, we are delayed until 11:30. Then not long after that, “actually we are now delayed until 12:30”.
So I basically screwed around at home and waited to leave. The boys played, Jason had coffee etc. Around 9:15 I was like ok we should just go probably. I’ll go get dressed. Jason was like ok I’ll just drive you (had planned to Uber).
9:45 we get in the car and we are on route 30 about 30 mins from the airport and the text from JetBlue comes: “back to 11:30!” And I am like oh crap, ok well that’s perfect actually. We will just make it. Then 3 mins later: “back to on time at 10:45!”
Now as you know the door for a 10:45 flight closes at 10:30. At this point it was 10:05 and I call jetblue to see about other options to maybe Long Beach but nothing. Sold out. Jason drives on the pike like a bat out of hell. We get there at 10:20 am. My heart was beating out of my chest, I was like are we actually going to miss this flight- it’s like unthinkable. The next 10 minutes are going to make or break me.
Story commences below. Let this be a lesson that JetBlue does roll back their delays!! This happened last year in Florida too actually.

Subject: Hello from fly-fi

Omg babe. We are in the air. that was so unbelievably intense! We ran into the big open terminal and I did exactly what you told me to do. I found a person and said can you help me? We are on the 10:45 to LA…and totally started to cry (for real). I was like shaking. She looked it up, it was 10:20 and she said the flight is closed. She must’ve seen the look on my face though, and said “hold on…” so the she ran over and got on the phone and came back with boarding passes! But then she didn’t realize we had bags so then it was a question of whether they could get those on. Which eventually was a yes.

So then she carries the car seat bag with us and escorts us to security which was a MESS. We cut the line but those agents were in ZERO hurry. The boys lost their water (which was fine, at one point I was like I’ll throw the whole bottle away I don’t care!), I had to totally take out the car seats and helmets and scan those through, my bag got flagged for the Epi pen and the ipads, my shoe got stuck etc etc . It was slow motion. I started to panic again and the boys were both crying and the girl called again to the gate and she was like don’t worry! You’re on I promise.

We ran down and there was still a line to board. And then I got a text for a delay until 11, so I was like wait we would have been fine? but the girl was like the problem was they had closed the flight. (She had had them reopen it for me so she could get us boarding passes and do our bags). Anyway we got through and she hugged me and I gave her $20 and we walked on!! I was shaking the entire time omg. I can’t believe it. You were an amazing delivery driver babe, a regular Uber and we never would have made it. Actually after we walked in and the girl was seeing if she could get me on, there was another guy wandering around waving his hands like “WTF? There was a delay and now it’s ON TIME?? I’ve never experienced that in my LIFE!” And naturally with his attitude no one rushed to help him, he was like “my wife and kid are in the car, can SOMEONE please tell me what I’m supposed to do right now.” And I was thinking to myself you’re screwed buddy, I know the next flight that has seats on it is 8:55 pm tonight based on what the agent told me over the phone when we were on our way in.

Anyway I’m still in disbelief. That was a crazy 20 minutes!!

The boys have latched on to one new app that is of course on just one iPad so I’m trying to download it to the other one- doubt it will work but we have tons of other stuff to play and watch. Haven’t tried the amazon streaming yet. Just bought a sandwich and cheese box and when the beverage cart gets here I might order a vodka lol. Phew!!

Xoxox

By the way I did send in a glowing review of Shaneah to JetBlue. We never would have gotten on that flight without her!

First day of First Grade!

ACK! I still need to post about California but we have had such a busy and FUN time wrapping up our summer in time for…

The first day of school!

Yep Natick Public Schools opened their doors today, August 29, and I have a certain 7 year old that is in Mrs. Brainerd’s class, 1JB, so off he went!

Lotta blue on that kid.
Anyway, Jason took him to school…

And Ashton got in his line and disappeared. Done and done.

There’s actually not much to report :-/ He got off the bus pretty sweaty, it’s 97 degrees out and his school has no AC. I instantly asked him loads of questions, as annoying moms do, and he said “Mommy,” [sigh] “I don’t remember anything about my day. And I’m just so tired. Ok? I need to eat a snack while I’m laying down on the couch.” And trudged home. Aw.

Too bad he has to go back tomorrow, and the next day…and 177 times after that until summer comes again 😉

I don’t know Mrs. Brainerd. Curriculum night is in a couple of weeks so I’ll have a better lay of the land after that. I have no idea where to find his classroom either. School is such a funny thing isn’t it? Ashton lives there practically and I couldn’t tell you what his teacher even looks like at this point. And I’m somehow fine with it.

Oh, after he had his snack while laying down, he said “UGH, we had to wait at dismissal SO LONG for the bus. Like a lot of hours Mommy.” “Hours, really?” “Well, like 15 minutes. But you know, I get to walk down to the gym by myself now because I’m not in Kindergarten anymore.” [He paused to consider this and then smiled sooo big.] “So THAT is really awesome. Walking by myself. Also, isn’t Christmas during school? I mean we get a break for Christmas, but it’s not Christmas unless I’m in school so that means Christmas is coming. So that’s good too.”

There’s a whole range of emoji faces I could insert right now.

Well they say this is a huge year, first grade. And the growing up train is showing no signs of slowing down. I’m not an unwilling passenger but the ticket price gets steeper every year. Does that make sense? Sometimes I go too far with my analogies 🙂

Happy first grade Ashton!! Love you honey. xoxoxo

Summer week on the Block

Well it’s time forrrrrrr…my annual summer vacation Block Island post! I think I say the same thing every year for the most part: the people, the beach and the week really haven’t changed haha! Although 2018 saw our largest house and largest group yet: Me, Jason, Ashton, Alex, GG, Grandpa, Grandma, Lizzie, Owen, Kari, Ben, Callie and Holden! Woo! Although I don’t think we have one whole group shot waaaaaah. How did that happen.

Welp, let’s begin at the beginning, which was when Sunday July 22 – Sunday July 29 started showing up in the 10 day weather forecast. It was not pretty guys. And it stayed not pretty, right up until when we left.

To add insult to injury, the day before we were supposed to leave, I got an email that the ferries had posted a service alert. It looked like this.

That’s gale force winds, for the layperson. You’re thinking to yourself, “Hmm, when was the last time I heard that term?” I’ll tell you. It was in the movie The Perfect Storm. We all know what happened to that ship but I digress.
So they cancelled the fast ferries and the slow car boats still ran, but we spent the entire 55 minute ride like this.

My smile masks the terror I felt. And there were many poor seasick souls with the whipping wind and driving rain. The boat was tipping and rolling like crazy (it was a “hold on tight” situation). NONETHELESS, we crawled off on Block Island, the rain stopped, and we went straight to the Oar for drinks.

Kari and Ben I think were in the parking lot for this one and GG hadn’t arrived yet, but this is the B-side of our group 🙂

So here is how it went overall, at least for me. The weather, I will say, held. We never had a humidity-free, crystal-clear blue sky day – it was windy some days and it did rain some days, but we went to the beach regardless and were no worse for the wear. The boys got to spend time with all three of their cousins at once and it was a really special week. They jumped in the waves, built sandcastles, boogie-boarded, fished, ate ice cream, and played their hearts out. Alex and Callie even got on ponies at one point. As for me, I sat in my beach chair for 6 straight days and could not have been happier.

Without further ado, I present the week in about 8% of the photos that were taken overall. I did weed through them, I swear! But if you are still scrolling next Tuesday, I apologize.

First moments at the Oar.
You know the kind of beer tastes the best? The “I survived” kind.

Fishing is the same as baseball, right?

Ashton is more interested in what is on Jason’s line. But isn’t this so cute, all their little heads gathered around to see the fish 🙂

SIL’s!

LUCKILY for all you readers, that was not the end of our summer fun. California is up next!

Ashton is SEVEN!!

OMG readers. Ashton is 7 years old which means this blog is 7 years old! And I’ve been a MOM for 7 years! Oy…I need to sit down. Oh wait I am already sitting. There is no respite from this fact! 7 years, wow…A bigger wow is that I managed to get through this particular birthday without throwing a party! Woo! I don’t know what happened – Ashton didn’t really ask for one and seemed satisfied when I told him that we could just have a special day together. So that’s what we did!

At 6:15 am on Friday, August 3rd, Ashton officially turned 7. He was not awake and I don’t think would grasp the concept anyway. Once everyone was up Ashton opened his presents immediately.

Making him wait would only be torturing him and no one likes to be tortured on their birthday. Behold the sequence in which Ashton opens the Battlebots and look specifically at Alex’s face:

This is what you call a strategic birthday present – it requires 2 players 😉 And it’s everything I hoped it would be, they battled away for hours on Friday and are still in love with it days later, which, for a toy, is a win.

Jason went to work and the boys and I went for a swim and to do some errands. When Jason got back, we headed to Fun & Games (Ashton’s pick), which is kind of like a Chuck E. Cheese but with better games and cleaner. Shockingly, there was no one inside the dark arcade on a beautiful Friday afternoon 😉 Basically you play the games, get some tickets, and trade them for cheap plastic prizes. A 7 year old boy’s dream! Ashton jumped a lot.

Then back home for some more Battlebots (they are remote controlled robots that have magnetic pieces placed *just so* – when the bot gets hit by a competitor the pieces can fly off, I’ll admit it’s exciting):

Grilled hot dogs (Ashton’s birthday dinner request), some cupcakes, picture attempts…

(He’s making that face because he blew his candles out before we were done singing and he knew
he should have waited – aw)

and that is the wrap on my little, er, BIG 7 year old!!

I, of course, am still 30.
🙂

Where was I? The first HALF of 2018

I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned on this blog before, but I started a new position at Bentley at the end of last year and it has more or less taken over everything! Not in a bad way, I’ve loved the new challenges and can see even more opportunity on the horizon, so it’s all good, but I feel like I’ve been operating at a blistering pace. A lot has gone by the wayside, including my little internet slice called A New Nill. I’m desperate not to lose this blog so this is my attempt to get everyone up to speed and stay flying after that.

Ashton
Ashton had a great Kindergarten year with Ms. Kuzinevich. She was everything we could have asked for in his first teacher. I think the best thing I can say about Ashton is what was on his ROSP at the end of the year (report on student progress). As background, the scale is 1-4 as measures of performance. A 3 (Meeting Expectations: This student consistently and independently
demonstrates mastery of/proficiency in the grade level standard) across the board is basically what we are told to expect this year. A 4 is rarer at this age (Exceeding Expectations: This student consistently and independently exceeds the grade level). Well, Ashton got a 2 (Still Progressing) in a couple places, namely spelling/phonics/word analysis. Mostly 3’s in all the subjects and no academic 4’s per se.

But where he did get 4’s? As follows under:
* Displays empathy
* Respects self and others even in differences
* Demonstrates impulse control
* Demonstrates eagerness and curiosity as a learner
* Cooperates with others in play and learning

I like could not be prouder. Those are the things that you just can’t teach. A fellow K mom wrote on my Facebook page:

Ashton is just good. He’s willful, curious, and ever excitable. He’s an amazing brother to Alex – teaches him things, helps him, and generally shows him the way. We are approaching his 7th birthday in a couple of weeks! In the meantime, Ashton is spending his summer learning to play golf, at flag football camp, and taking the tooth fairy to the cleaners. He’s lost both his top and bottom sets of front teeth as of last night!

Height: 4 feet 2 inches (95th percentile. He was almost a head taller than a lot of his classmates!)
Weight: 55 pounds
Shoe size: 13, edging up to a Youth 1! WHAT?!
Clothes size: 7 (8 in some shirts)

Last day of Kindergarten: June 28, 2018

Ashton is recently into the magicians that he’s seen on god knows what YouTube videos. Today is the talent show at camp and at 6:30 am he appeared at my bedside to show me a card trick and ask me if I had a black suit he could wear. He never stops talking.

Alex
Alex also never stops talking. He’s a bit of an attention you-know-what. He’s sometimes sassy and moody, and other times joyful and silly. And ooo-wee does he have a temper and it can change on the spot. Despite this lovely description of his demeanor (who could resist?), he’s basically married. Her name is Charlie, she is about to turn 4 and they are classmates at CNS. He makes bracelets and pictures for her and once, constructed a makeshift iPad out of cardboard and stickers and would routinely “Facetime” her. She’s next to him at the end-of-the-year preschool concert and well, it’s become a thing. Luckily I like her mom because we’ve had a lot of playdates.

Last day of preschool (with Charlie): May 25, 2018
Height: 3 feet 7 inches (43″)
Weight: 43 pounds
Shoe size: Just about 11
Clothes size: 4/5, 5
Alex has been spending his time learning how to swim and also dancing. He’s quite the dancer. Every night after dinner we put on semi-inappropriate music (just top 40 stuff but the lyrics, as you may know, get questionable) and Alex is in his glory (see comment above about attention). If you don’t believe me, watch this one (breakdancing) or this one (lyrical).

The talking
This deserves its own category because there is so.much.of.it.
“Mommy, lookatthis.” (Said so fast it truly is one word)
“Mommy, come here.”
“Mommy, I’m hungry.”
“Mommy, I want a show.”
“Mommy, can you help me with this?”
“Mommy, did you know…”
“Mommy, guess what?”
“Mommy, where is…”
“LOOKATTHIS, Mommy.”
Mommy, Mommy, MOMMY, MOMMYYYYY!!

The boys and I just spent a long weekend together by ourselves because Jason was working and by the end I felt like I had been pummeled with words for three straight days. Everything is a giant conversation:

Ashton (to Alex): Do you want to be a grownup?
Alex: Yeah!
Ashton: Me too. Then guess what we have to go to college for 18 years. And we have to stay there by ourselves. But don’t worry we will make new friends. But wait, is there food there? What grade will I be in? Will I have homework? You know I don’t really know how to read. Or spell.
Me: You’ll know how by then.
Ashton: Will I have my own phone? To keep forever?
Me: Yep and maybe even your own car.
Ashton: WHAT?! But I don’t know how to drive.
Me: You will.
Ashton: WOW…[huge smile]…So Alex, do you want to be partners? We can share a room and have a sleepover every night. Are there toys there? What about games? How many? Will you come visit me?
** and on and on and on about what it will be like and where is it and all that. I couldn’t even capture it all, and now that I’ve typed it I realize there’s really no end to this except to say it basically never ended!! **

Other funny things…

Ashton, trying to give Alex a writing lesson: “Alex, put a period! A PERIOD! Do you know what a period is? It’s your brain telling your pencil to stop.”

Alex: “Mommy, when I grow up I’m going to be just like you. Except, of course I’m a boy, and I can’t change that, but everything else will be the same.”
The boys were reluctantly eating enchiladas for dinner.
Me (taking a bite off Ashton’s plate): You guys, I don’t care what you say, this is soooo good.
Ashton: YUCK!
Me: [annoyed] Come on Ashton, that is not nice, I worked hard to make these and you’re not even trying it!
Ashton: But you said you didn’t care what I say!
Alex calls bug bites “bug cuts” and seltzer/carbonated things are “spicy”
Me (again at a dinnertime when they are not eating): You know, someday you guys are going to have your own kids and you’re going to work so hard cooking for them and be really be mad when they don’t even try it.
Ashton: I’m going to cook? Being a great parent means cooking for your kids?
Me: Yeah, sometimes!
Ashton: Well then I’m going to be a REALLY great parent. When my kids say “Can we go to Toys R Us?” I’m going to say “YUP! Get in the car!”
Alex: Me too Ashton! I’ll meet you there.
Ashton: Well we are going to go almost every day.
Alex: Don’t worry, I’ll have my own car.
Me: Where are you going to get the money for all these toys and cars?
Ashton: Well of course, I’m going to go to work.
Me: You’re going to have a job that pays you a lot?
Ashton: Yes. I’m going to be the boss. JUST LIKE I AM NOW.

The boys ran next door to see if Kayleigh was around to play. They were told 30 more minutes. Ashton reported back: “She will be home in half a clock!”

I asked Alex why he had a band-aid on his stomach. “My tummy hurts.”

Ashton: “I’m so thirsty. Like 100 times thirsty. I’m so thirsty I could eat a whole horse.”

So we had a good spring, full of all the activities. Jason’s been pushing the golf and I’ve been very into making sure the boys are strong swimmers. Alex is just about ready for the deep end and has been in lots of lessons since school ended. We had a full house for both Mother’s and Father’s Day weekends, we’ve hit Wayland Town Beach a bunch, we headed to Long Island for July 4th, and next week we are off for our annual BI summer vacation. Really hoping to start posting regularly again after that 🙂 See you on the flip side!

Before and After: Board and Batten Transformation

Wow guys. How deep do I get into this? We have so massively overhauled the front downstairs portion of our house plus the staircase and upstairs hallway that I don’t know where to begin. I guess a quick review of all that it entailed, in order:

1. Changing out old interior doors for new ones
Our back hallway was a sea of old doors with old hardware and most of them didn’t close, had large gaps in the jambs, etc.

Semi after

You can’t tell but it brought us into the 21st century. The door guy was awesome but he does not do finish work, so Jason had a ton of painting and touching up to do (which he did some time after this picture was taken). I’ll also note, all the doors had dated gold hinges and the knobs to the bedroom doors upstairs were gold too. We i.e. Jason changed every single one to a nice new silver. Because consistency.

Ok off to a strong start here.

2. Waiting patiently for the right piano and grandfather clock to come along (key decorating pieces)

Our foyer is kind of useless. I think I’ve talked about this in the past. What was once the original living room is now just a pass through to get upstairs which makes it hard to furnish. ‘Tis a minor detail that no one plays the piano (yet) – when the right baby grand came along (holler at Robyn for that one!) I hired movers and it came home with us.

Then I found the perfect floor clock on Craigslist. Nevermind I had to drive to Connecticut to get it (the things we do for love!). Then I had it painted.

3. A new chandelier
The one that came with our house was not my favorite. What WAS my favorite was this huge wooden orb chandelier hanging at Jordan’s furniture for $1,500. So what did I do? I bought a knock off from Home Depot for $400 that was kind of a gross brown and then had that painted too (by the same guy in the same color as the clock)!

4. Crown molding upstairs
We have a double height entryway that has always been begging for some fancying up. Right after New Year’s we had a very large snowstorm coming and a snow day had been officially declared. Around 9 am, the first heavy flakes were starting to fall. In a panic, foreseeing we would all be stuck in the house for HOURS, and with nothing to do, I said:
“Omg today would be the perfect day for you to finally do the upstairs crown molding!” and Jason was like “But I don’t have any of the materials.”
“Pshhh. So? The snow is only just starting. Go to Home Depot right now! Go babe! It’s a race against time but you can make it!
And while the roads were worsening by the second and everyone in Home Depot was frantically buying shovels, salt, and sand, Jason was marching out of the lumber aisle with strips of crown molding over his shoulder. That’s just how we do.

5. Painting
There’s not much to this one. We hired painters 😀 In one day the walls went from the pre-existing beige to Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray @ 75%. Who loses sleep over paint colors?
Since Jason was planning to do the custom board and batten shortly (a hybrid of roughly 56 inspiration pictures from Pinterest I had collected) we only had them roll 2/3 of the way down.
6. Refacing the fireplace

In the middle of the woodwork project, on a random day at a random time, Jason said “Well, I might as well re-do the fireplace now too.”
“Wow! Awesome honey! Should we go look at some tile like right this instant? Yes, yes we should!” 😀

7. Board and Batten installation
This, my friends, is everything. This was so involved and so extensive that I’m going to make a separate post about it. I have to, it deserves it. But this lucky post will see only the befores and gorgeous afters. Ready? Per usual they are a little off. I’m not a professional or anything.

And some general lovely ones:

There is just beautiful woodwork everywhere! I love, love, love everything about it. It brings our living space up so much, to have this board and batten winding through the first floor, up the stairs and framing all the hallways. As I said, this project will soon have a post of its own because Jason did so much work on it, but for now I should think this is the most solid before and after post I’ve ever done. All the above steps were way more involved than I let on (i.e we had to re-do the frame wall after the new paint, cut our tiles to custom sizes for the fireplace, etc.) but of course Jason makes it look easy. So annoying.
Next up: laundry room and guest room.

(What? You don’t think we’re finished, do you??) Happy weekend all!
